Atom Duel is a collaboration with artist Tsubasa Berg and designer Victor Hu. The Card Deck was inspired by popular trading cards that have a dearth of any useful information; why not make a set of cards with characters that had any educational value? The Periodic Table seemed like a great choice- Tsubasa created a character for each element that served as a visual pnemonic. The nice thing about the periodic table is that its an important concept in chemistry, but it is not crucial to memorize or completely understand. Therefore Atom Duel is not some sort of study guide, its educational content is valuable and enriching in its own right but serves no sneaky academic purpose. However it re centers actual knoweldge about the world into a play space, unlike mythical creatures and random invented monsters that have no real interest outside of their ever increasing universe, whose main goal is to sell more trading cards.
